Must see:The latest craze in Osaka; a silk work café

Maid cafes and cat-themed cafes were all the rage at one time. Now comes a cafe that celebrates silkworms, but for a limited time only.

Earth, a cafe in Osaka‘s Nishinari Ward, says the presence of silkworms offers patrons a rare opportunity to reflect on tradition of sericulture.

The silkworms are only about 3 centimeters long, but look like tiny versions of Mothra, the giant mothlike monster featured in the eponymous 1961 movie.

“The way they wiggle really kills me,” says 34-year-old Satoshi Mutsu, a cafe Earth regular who came up with the idea.

The silkworm cafe will run daily through late February, when the 22 silkworms on display are expected to turn into cocoons.
