Mijn verhaal begint zo’n zeven jaar geleden. Toen ontmoette ik eerst de liefde van mijn leven waar ik nu mee ben getrouwd. Een Japanner die zich had geworteld in Nederland nadat zijn familie rond zijn geboorte hun thuishaven verlieten en het grote avontuur opzoeken in Nederland.
Bij mijn man speelde altijd het idee dat hij graag een keer in zijn leven wilde ervaren hoe het was om ‘als een Japanner’ in Japan te wonen en te werken. Hij zette daad bij woord en vond een baan hier in Tokyo. Nadat ik voldoende overtuigd was dat hij zich hier in Japan had gesetteld, heb ik mijn baan opgezegd, mijn boeltje ingepakt en ben ik mijn lief gevolgd om hem de kans te geven zijn droom waar te maken. Inmiddels woon ik bijna twee jaar in Tokyo en ik heb daar nog steeds geen spijt van. De cultuur, de taal, het landschap, de gebruiken, het eten, alles intrigeert me ontzettend en ik sta nog elke dag verbaasd van wat ik zie, ruik, voel en meemaak in een wereldstad als Tokyo.

Wie zijn wij?
Ik ben, zoals je misschien wel een klein beetje hebt opgemaakt uit het verhaal hierboven, een avontuurlijk type. Ik heb tijdens mijn studietijd een half jaar in China gewoond en daar de taal (voor zover dat lukt in een kort tijdsbestek) geleerd en een onderzoek gedaan naar de (culturele) problemen waar westerse bedrijven tegenaan lopen als zij een bedrijf willen starten in China. In mijn studententijd ben ik er ook veel op uitgetrokken met weinig meer dan een lonely planet, mijn passie en wat kleding om nieuwe plekken te ontdekken. Ik ben niet bang om nieuwe wegen (letterlijk en figuurlijk) in te slaan en zo op ontdekkingsreis te gaan. Als het misloopt dan vertrouw ik er op dat er altijd mensen zijn die me de juiste richting op willen wijzen. Leergierig en nieuwsgierig zijn zeker woorden die bij mij passen. Ik wil graag het beste halen uit wat de wereld en mijn omgeving mij te bieden heeft en laat het liefst geen kansen schieten.

Inmiddels is Tokiotours gegroeid naar twee man sterk en houd de website in de gaten, want binnenkort krijgen we versterking van Alexandra Burger. Zij doet een opleiding aan de NTHV (HBO tourisme)

Ik werd al geïntrigeerd door de Japanse cultuur tijdens mijn middelbare school, en na ik mijn diploma behaalde besloot ik om van mijn hobby mijn studie te maken en begon aan de Bachelor ‘Japanese Studies’ in Leiden. Tijdens mijn studie heb ik een jaar in Japan gewoond. Door omstandigheden werd ik een paar keer verplaatst en heb uiteindelijk lange tijd in zowel Yamagata, Okinawa als Nagasaki gespendeerd. Dit heeft me een heel breed beeld van de cultuur gegeven, en de manier waarop die verschilt in verschillende delen van het land. Aansluitend aan de Bachelor ben ik doorgegaan met de Master ‘Asian Studies’. Inmiddels studeer ik al 5 jaar en ben steeds meer van het land gaan houden. De sfeer, de mensen, de gebruiken; de een nog vreemder dan de ander. Ik heb de vele mysteries die het land kent natuurlijk nog lang niet opgelost, maar dat maakt het wonen in Japan des te interessanter. Elke dag is een nieuw avontuur!

Ik wil de vele avonturen die Japan biedt graag met anderen delen, dus toen ik Nicki van Tokio Tours tegenkwam was me al snel duidelijk dat rondleidingen door Tokyo geven hiervoor de perfecte kans is. Ik heb ook gewerkt als tour gids in Amsterdam en dit beviel me zeer goed. Ik vind het leuk om mensen verschillende ‘gezichten’ van de stad te laten zien, zowel de historische plekken en ‘kodak moments’ als het dagelijkse leven; de sleur van de salarimannen in de trein en de paraderende hipsters in hun extravagante outfits. Aangezien Tokyo zo’n een enorme stad is, en toch nog maar weinig Japanners Engels spreken, is het makkelijk om urenlang rond te dwalen. Hoewel sommige mensen dit met opzet doen is het voor alle anderen handig om met een gids de stad te doorkruisen; wij laten u in ieder geval de mooiste plekjes zien!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Hoe is Tokiotours gekomen
Tokiotours bestaat nog niet zo heel lang. Dit jaar ben ik pas echt serieus met mijn bedrijf begonnen en ben ik tours als een professionele tourmanager gaan aanbieden. Nadat ik al mijn familie en vrienden in Tokio had rondgeleid, speelde het idee dat ik dit voor nog veel meer mensen kon doen. Zo is Tokiotours begonnen.

Wat bied ik aan?
Ik bied kleinschalige privé tours aan met veel ruimte voor persoonlijke aandacht. De tours binnen Tokio duren vrijwel altijd (uitzonderingen nagelaten) vier uur. Natuurlijk bestaat ook altijd de mogelijkheid om meerdere tours te combineren of te mixen. Ik ben heel flexibel en kan ook op de dag zelf nog aanpassingen maken als de situatie daar naar vraagt.Ik wil weten wat JOU beweegt en waar jij naar op zoek bent! Ik wil je de Tokio ervaring van je leven geven met vele mooie herinneringen waar je later met plezier aan terug kunt denken. Ik ben er voor jou met al je vragen en zal, voor zover dat mogelijk is, zoveel mogelijk tegemoet komen aan wat jij wilt zien, doen en meemaken.

My story starts about seven years ago. At this time I met my current husband and the love of my life with whom I have been happily married for about two years. He is a Japanese that had rooted himself in The Netherlands (my home country) after his family had decided around the time he was born, to follow their dreams and the great unknown and to settle themselves in The Netherlands to start their own business.
My husband always played with the thought what it would be like to live and work as ‘a true Japanese’ in Japan. Since he had lived in The Netherlands practically all his life, he always wondered what it would be like to come to Japan on a (semi) permanent basis. He put his money where his mouth was and looked for a job in Tokyo. After I had been convinced he enjoyed living in Japan and would not want to come back home having to cope with such a completely different environment, I decided to quit my job and follow my love halfway across the globe to enable him to follow his dreams.
By now we have been living in Japan for almost two years and I have not regretted it since. The culture, the language, the landscape, the customs, the food, it all intrigues and inspires me and still to this day I am amazed about what is happening around me, the things I taste, see, feel, smell and witness in such a metropolis as Tokyo.

Who are we?
As you may have picked up from the previous paragraph I am what you might call and adventurous spirit. When I was in university, I lived several months in Beijing, China to study the language (as far as one can get a grasp on that in a short period of time) and to write a paper on the (cultural) difficulties that western companies face when trying to set up shop in China.
When I was single, I often times went on trips with not much more than a lonely planet, my passions and dreams and some clothes to discover new places and meet new people. One of my passions is to try out new (alley) ways to see where I end up. (both literally and figuratively) and to experience new discoveries that you might not see when taking the beaten track. I always count on the fact that if things go wrong, there will be a helping hand nearby that is willing to point me in the right direction.
Inquisitive and a thirst for knowledge are some phrases that really apply to me. I want to squeeze every situation or experience for all it’s worth and take out all that I can from it. It is never too late to learn something new and what I hate most are missed opportunities. Better to have lived and learned (making plenty of mistakes on the way) rather than living safe and end up with regrets.

Recently Tokiotours has grown and we have welcomed Mieke Aarsman as one of our new guides as well as Alexandra Burger who is doing an internship at Tokiotours.

Mieke Aarsman
I have been interested in Japanese culture since my highschool years, and after graduation I decided to turn that interest into a study at Leiden University. During my Bachelor ‘Japanese Studies’ I spent one year in Japan as an exchange student, consecutively living in Yamagata, Okinawa and Nagasaki due to circumstances. This experience provided me a very broad view on Japanese life and how it differs per area. After my Bachelor I started the Master ‘Asian Studies’ at Leiden, through which I am now back in Japan, this time in Tokyo.

All in all I’ve studied Japanese for over 5 years now and I’ve come to appreciate the country more and more. The atmosphere, the people, the customs; one is even stranger than the other. Of course I have yet to solve many of Japan’s mysteries, but that makes living here all the more interesting. Every day is a new adventure!

It is my passion to share these adventures with others, so when I met Tokio Tours’ Nicki Yoshihara who provided me with the opportunity to do so via tour guiding I didn’t have to think for long. I used to work as a tour guide in Amsterdam which I really enjoyed, so guiding tours in Japan was a perfect opportunity. I always try to show people all the different ‘faces’ of Tokyo, both historical highlights and ‘kodak moments’ as well as the daily life of Tokyoites; jaded ‘salarymen’ packed in trains like cans of sardines and hip youth showing their extravagant fashions in the streets. Since Tokyo is such a vast city, and even now few Japanese speak English, one can easily get lost and wander around for hours in the metropolis. Although some people like to do this intentionally, for all the others a well-informed guide might be just what you need. We are sure to show you the best of Tokyo!

Alexandra Burger
As a graduation student at the NHTV International University of Applied Sciences Breda I have been granted with the opportunity to fulfill a placement abroad. Since I have had a passion for Japan for many years, the destination was quickly chosen. Therefore I was over the moon when Tokiotours invited me to the country’s capital.

To be working for a private tour company gives me to chance to get close to people and showing them what they are most interested in. Personally I enjoy architecture and history versus modernity the most. The city of Tokyo is a place where all wishes regarding sightseeing can be satisfied. Of all the places I have guided tours Tokyo is by far the most challenging and exciting one. The people are very kind and helpful while the city provides you clean and lively streets. Living her temporarily seems to make me see things in a new perspective; the politeness and punctuality are something we can all learn from. But Tokyo can learn a lot from tourists as well. The more they come in contact with foreigners, the more they seem to open up and dare to speak English. How Tokiotours got started
Tokiotours does not exist in its current form for a very long time. In fact only this year I started to offer professional tours as a tour manager. After guiding all of my family members and friends around in Tokyo I decided that I could do this for more people and spread the joy. This is how Tokiotours got started.

What do I offer?
I offer small sized private tours with a lot of room for personal attention. My tours within Tokyo are almost always four hours (with some exceptions). Of course you can always mix and match. For instance you can combine two tours or you can select parts from other tours to add to the one you have chosen. I am very flexible and can even make last minute changes on the day itself if the situation requires it. I want to know what drives YOU! What you are looking for and want to experience. I want to be able to give you the Tokyo experience of a life time with lots of fond memories that you can cherish for years to come. I am here for you and will answer all of those burning questions wherever possible and will try to adapt myself and my programs towards what you want to see, do and experience.
